Long before it bore the "Kelly" name, this Hermes handbag was known as the Sac à Dépêches (dispatch bag), designed in the 1930s by Robert Dumas. Its Hollywood debut happened when legendary costume designer Edith Head sourced the structured handbag for Grace Kelly’s character in the 1955 Alfred Hitchcock thriller, To Catch a Thief. Kelly fell in love with the accessory on set and kept it as part of her personal wardrobe. It is only in 1956, having left Hollywood to marry Prince Rainier III and became Princess Grace of Monaco, that she found herself the target of relentless paparazzi. Newly pregnant with her first child, Princess Caroline, was photographed stepping out of a car. To protect her privacy, she instinctively shielded her growing baby bump with her Hermès bag. It quickly became a status symbols over the years and remains a highly coveted piece due to its limited production and inability to buy in boutique. Crafted in 2020 as special order- a service reserved for VIP clients where a handbag can be custom made with a choice of leather type, colors and hardware, this specific Kelly 28cm was made from rouge H and Gold Togo leather, one of the most appreciated type of leather of the house for it durability. It also bears the Horseshoe stamp in gold foil matching its gold hardware.
